Perfectly Ready's sire More Than Ready adds two more stakes winners this weekend

Perfectly Ready's super sire, More Than Ready
adds two more Stakes winners to his tally this weekend.

Sire More Than Ready added two new stakes winners to his tally following a two-Stake double on Saturday.

The John O'Shea trained filly Olonana (pictured) made a triumphant return to racing after a summer break landing the G2 Challenge Stakes at Randwick while earlier in the day in Melbourne, Peter Moody's 2YO colt Common Interest kept his unbeaten record intact collecting the Festival of Racing Stakes (Listed).

Olonana's brainstorming finish was all the more meritorius given that she was having her first start in open company and at weight-for-age no less.
Meanwhile, Moody was full of praise for exciting colt Common Interest following his dashing win at Flenmington.

In a matter of hours, he duo took More Than Ready's number of stakes winners to 53.

Seven Schillings close 2nd in Group 1 Diamond Stakes

Kaaptan (NZ) wins Gr.1 Ford Diamond Stakes (2YO, 1200m)

Kaaptan (NZ)

The Stephen McKee-trained Kaaptan (NZ) (Kaapstad) proved the King of Gr.1 recompense over the weekend.

Unwanted by stable clients and a tardy starter in the Karaka Million (1200m) in January, Kaaptan (NZ) served out a good measure of goodwill to owner Trevor McKee with victory in the Gr.1 Ford Diamond Stakes (2YO, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Away smartly with the Gr.1 field for 2YO’s, apprentice Craig Grills had the Kaapstad gelding nestled nicely  in behind the pacemaker Seven Schillings (NZ) (O’Reilly) throughout before drawing out into the centre of the track for the run to the line. Seven Schillings was bred by long time clients and friends Mr. and Mrs Ed Aroa and purchased for $50,000 from Brighthill's draft at the 2008 Karaka Sales.  We sold a full brother for $95,000 at this years yearling sales.

Refusing to concede defeat Seven Schillings (NZ), who’d fanned out to the very outside of the track, kept fighting all the way to the post, closely accompanied by the Volksraad filly, Corsage (NZ).

However, after 1200m on the dead 6 Ellerslie track, all honours were to lie with Kaaptan (NZ), who crossed in a time of 1:12.34 a neck in advance of Seven Schillings (NZ), with Corsage (NZ) a mere nose away in third.

Returning $120,000 for the effort, Kaaptan (NZ) proved that despite being the only horse unwanted of the 11 yearlings purchased for trading at the 2008 Karaka Yearling Sales Series by Trevor McKee, his $65,000 Select Sale price was in fact a solid investment.

Bred by CE Buckingham and CJT Davison and born and raised at Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge, Kaaptan (NZ) is out the Chem mare Fanny Black

A two time winner from 1100-1400, Fanny Black is a ¾ sister to Swift Swallow (dam of Zola) and is a half sister to the Gr.1 Derby winner, So Casual (Casual Lies).

Very much in the bold of his striking sire, Kaaptan (NZ) is one of eight Gr.1 winners for the now deceased stallion, Kaapstad (NZ).

Kaaptan (NZ) has now raced on 7 occasions for one win and four placings and is nominated for New Zealand’s only other Gr.1 feature for 2YO’s – the Ford Manawatu Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni on Mar 28.

Seven in Line for Carnival Bonus

Seven horses eligible for the 2009 Carnival Sale Bonus have gained a start in Saturday's New Zealand Bloodstock Carnival Sale Bonus 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie.

The third race on the Derby Day race card has attracted a full field of fourteen starters, half of which will be racing to be the first Carnival Sale horse home, an achievement that will be rewarded by a bonus cheque for $100,000, four times the stake to the race winner. (Of the $100,000, $10,000 shall be paid to the person(s) who offered the Bonus-winning horse at the Carnival Sale and the owners of the horse on raceday shall receive the balance of $90,000)

Richard and Chris Otto know all too well the feeling of winning without the bonus after their ineligible gelding Sanjura (Sandtrap) won the 2008 event, but the $100,000 bonus went to second placed Fully Fledged (Align).

To their credit, the father and son combination will line up Putinka (St Petersburg - Tres Vite, by Centro) in the 2009 Bonus Race, a horse they sourced from last year's Carnival Sale for $10,000 from Brighthill Farm who also bred Putinka, for the purpose of targeting the bonus. Tres Vite a 2YO winner herself produced a very smart full brother last Spring.

The gelding ran a decent second to smart Irish-connected filly Eileen Dubh (Storm Creek), sixth in the Group 2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes, at his last start at Wairoa. He looks to have drawn best of the Carnival Bonus eligble two-year-olds, in stall 10, with top hoop Michael Walker retaining the ride.

The John Wheeler trained gelding Our Saint (My Halo - Ashberg, by Bigstone) comes into the race with the highest rating, and his form franks that. Fourth placed in the Group 3 Ford 2YO Classic (1200m) at his last start, Our Saint won at Trentham the start previous, and he looks to have two options in the race, settle back or play ' catch me if you can'. He has drawn barrier 20

Wheeler's other runner in the race is the grand-daughter of dual Group 1 winner Love Dance (Kaapstad), Tipperary Miss (Volksraad - Royal Cashel, by Royal Academy). She will look to add to her residual value after a fifth placing at her very first outing behind talented St Germaine (Keeper), second in the Group 2 Matamata Breeders Stakes last Saturday. She jumps from barrier 14.

The Ian and Anne Herbert owned Saint Peter (St Petersburg - Fifteen Eleven, by Kinjite) bred and purchased from Brighthill Farm, is another who has finished just in behind some class acts. The gelding ran fourth behind Shuttleworth (Volksraad) at his last start six weeks ago, and is expected to go well fresh on Saturday. He, like most of the Carnival Bonus eligible runners, has drawn horridly in 18, but the experience of big race day rider Noel Harris will hopefully assist to overcome any disadvantage. Saint Peter has a yearling half brother by Ustinov currently being broken in who is being targetted at the NZB 2YO sale in November, and the dam Fifteen Eleven currently infoal to Brighthill resident sire Perfectly Ready.

The Toothfairy (Volksraad - Split the Night, by Senor Pete) is the most experienced eligible runner with five starts to her name for trainers Graeme and Mark Sanders. Jumping from barrier eight she will be looking to return to the form that saw her run fourth behind Corsage (Volksraad) at Ellerslie on December 28.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Last Mohican (Hawkeye - Centieme, by Centaine) and Poetic Music (Stravinsky - Flying Florence, by Centaine) have had no race day experience but both were impressive trial winners at Cambridge last Tuesday. Shane Simon has a lot of time for his grandson of Danehill, while Richard Collett believes Poetic music is a natural, 'jump and run', early type of filly.

The New Zealand Bloodstock Carnival Sale Bonus 2YO Race should prove to be a marvelous spectacle, with tactics sure to play a large role in a race where all eligible $100,000 Carnival Bonus runners bar The Toothfairy have drawn wide.

The race is set to jump at 1.30pm, with the New Zealand Derby timed to go at 5.22pm. To be on course for the first day of Auckland Cup Week, visit Ellerslie Racecourse.

Gr.3 Ford 2YO Classic (1200m) Review

Gutsy 2YO, Seven Schillings (NZ)

Archer family back in black-type spotlight
11:45 AM Monday Feb 16, 2009

The run of stakes success for David Archer and his family added a new chapter on Saturday, with the running of the Gr.3 Ford 2YO Classic (1200m) at Pukekura Raceway.

Recently triumphant at Gr.1 level with Mufhasa (NZ) and Gallions Reach (NZ), the Archer crew notched the additional Gr.3 win with their gutsy grey filly, Seven Schillings (NZ) (O’Reilly).

Breathing down the hindquarters of the pacemaker Our Saint (NZ) (My Halo) throughout, Seven Schillings (NZ) took control of matters shortly after swinging for home, but was kept strongly to the task when ominously challenged by Te Akau Rose (NZ) (Thorn Park) and Shuttleworth (NZ) (Volksraad).

At the post, the diminutive filly had found plenty in reserves for rider Sam Spratt, crossing with a length to spare from Te Akau Rose (NZ) and with an additional half length up her sleeve from the third placegetter, Shuttleworth (NZ).

Like Gallions Reach (NZ), Seven Schillings (NZ) is prepared by Pukekohe trainer, Richard Yuill.

With a win and two placings from her three career starts, Seven Schillings (NZ) has all but earned back the $50,000 David Archer outlaid for her at the 2008 Festival Yearling Sale sold through the Brighthill Farm draft.

Interestingly, just as he did with Mufhasa’s full brother, Archer returned to Karaka in 2009 to obtain the Seven Schilling’s full brother, who was also offered from the Brighthill Farm draft for $90,000.

Bred by E S & Mrs L E M Aroa, Seven Schillings is out of the Shannon mare Landon (NZ).

Whilst unplaced herself, Landon (NZ) is strongly distinguished on the pedigree page, where she counts the Gr.1 performed Kajema (NZ) (O’Reilly) as a half sister and a shares the same second dam as the multiple Gr.1 winner, Avedon (NZ) (Famous Star).

Like Kajema (NZ), Seven Schillings is by the champion Waikato Studsire O’Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon).
